Russell's Do's and Don'ts of Web Design
  • DO plan your site before creating any pages. Try to use Inspiration or some other visual organizer to do this so that you have an idea of what you need in order to communicate an idea. Do some sketches of page layouts in conjunction with research based on looking at good and bad sites.
  • DO gather your resources into one folder and organize it into sub-folders. Bring all your images, documents, links, etc. together so that you minimize time wasted on searching for those things during the design of pages.
  • DO keep your pages simple. Keep the amount of material on a given page simple and keep the graphics, colors, etc. simple.
  • DON’T use flashing or blinking text…it’s just annoying!
  • DON’T use frames. They are confusing for a beginner and there are better ways to lay things out in a web page.
  • DO use a title for each of the pages within your site and make sure they make sense.
  • DON’T post under construction pages. If it isn’t done, don’t put anything up at all.
  • DON’T center everything on a page, take the time to align text and pictures nicely.
  • DON’T use “busy” backgrounds…it’s just annoying and doesn’t look nice.
  • DO limit the length of text lines because it is hard to read pages where the text goes all the way across your screen.
